Whispers and whispers.
I attended a Catholic high school, St. Mary's Senior High, located in downtown Calgary. I remember when I first saw the St. Mary's Band in grade 9 when they were doing high school recruiting (which I don't think they do so much anymore in Calgary). The band teacher was Mr. Barette. He was an effeminate Frenchman. He, and the band trip to Hawaii the year before I attended St. Mary's were the primary reasons I joined band (and of course my love of the alto sax). When I arrived in the band program in the fall of 2006 Mr. Barette was said to be taking a sabatical. It was at this point that I recall my dad saying that he looked like he had AIDS...what a crazy thought. A gay band teacher in a Catholic High School dying of AIDS no less? My father, the interal jump to conclusions biggot...except I think it turns out papa danda was correct. There's whispers on the facebook discussion board of what the "long term" illness he was suffering from was...there's also whispers about him "being survived" by a male partner...Either way he will be greatly missed because I think he got a kick out of my combat boots, fishnet stockings and floor length non-regulation band skirt with the two slits half-way up the sides (all three were ultimately banned) and my green hair to match the green bow ties. And, in retrospect, maybe papa danda read people better than I thought...he just didn't know how to socially appropriately express it.
love,
Michelle D.
